History
Charleston Orphan House was established on 18 October 1790 by a city ordinance, "For the purpose of supporting and educating poor, orphan children, and those of poor, distressed and disabled parents, who are unable to support and maintain them." [1][2]
The orphange building was opened in 1794 and was located at 160 Calhoun Street, Charleston, South Carolina. [3][4][5] The building was later torn down and the current location is being used by The College of Charleston. [2]
The insitution officially closed in 1978 and was turned into a non-profit by the name of Carolina Youth Development Center.[2]
